Steve shifted restlessly in bed, his forehead furrowing as he dreamed. His sleep was light and uneasy and has been ever since Bucky went off on a mission with several of the other Avengers a few days ago. Rationally it was the right thing to do, he knew. Bucky has been joining him for the last few missions with the Avengers and those missions have gone more or less smoothly so far and logically the next step would be for Bucky to try working WITH them without him constantly looking over their shoulders. And this was mission that requires more of Bucky's stealth and sniping skills and less of his own, so it makes it a good one to do a 'test run'.
It doesn't stop him from worrying though, especially when they're late from returning. At least, it wasn't anything like the time he got lost in the jungle for a week with no communication (Tony had upgraded their communication devices yet again recently), Natasha had called in saying they were delayed and will be back within a day or two.
While they were gone, he'd tried to fill his time up as to stop himself from brooding so much. All the paperwork has been filed (not that he had much to do, he makes a point of doing his share of paperwork in an orderly and timely fashion unlike others he could think of such as Tony), worked out in the gym that he had destroyed even a few of the specially-enhanced punching bags, done some more reading in history and politics, tried to get started on a few sketches he'd been thinking of doing, and experimented with a few dishes he hoped Bucky will like.
As light as his sleep was, it doesn't take much to wake him when he feels someone stepping inside the bedroom. Steve kept still however and his breathing light and easy and pretended to stay asleep. If it was an intruder, the shield was in easy reach underneath the bed.
